Your voice - Your sound
Well done! You have completed session one - meeting your physical voice.
We learnt the physical voice is simply the sound that is produced from a column of air flowing over your vocal cords and vocal tract. That sound can vary and it is unique to you. It can vary in volume, pitch, rate and quality. You can control these qualities. In public speaking, you have to be intentional in controlling these characteristics of sound because that physical sound is the primary medium for conveying your message.
Using your physical voice effectively enables you to show your own passion for a topic.
Now try this
Choose one of these examples of talks that demonstrate the right use of voice:
- Sir Ken Robinson - Do Schools Kill Creativity?
- Hans Rosling - The Best Stats You have ever seen
- Amy Cuddy - Your body language may shape who you are
Reflect on the talk and what you learnt in session 1.
Write a paragraph describing yourself.
Practice using your physical voice by reading the description varying the tone of voice, rate, pitch, volume. You can use annotations like black dots for a pause, red dots for a smile, a green highlight for speeding up and orange for slowing down Practice pausing and taking deep breaths to emphasise points of interest. Record yourself reading your paragraph and then listen to it with your eyes closed.

Reflection...sound you
“Your voice is unique. You don’t need to change it to be ‘better’ — you just need to use it with purpose.”
Commit to one vocal habit to practice this week to improve the sound of your voice(e.g., breathing, slowing down, speaking with more energy, speaking louder).
